Counter-subversion

One of our key functions as a security service is to protect national security and Sweden’s democratic system of government. A central tenet of this work is to prevent any unlawful pressure from influencing fundamental processes of the democratic system.

Our focus in this area is on politically motivated groups and individuals, such as political and religious extremists, that engage in crimes that are severe or carried out systematically in order to change society.

Based on what is often very personal motives, these crimes may also pose a threat to representatives of society. It is evident that the democratic system may be seriously compromised when such activities lead to elected representatives abstaining from taking on certain issues, to public officials changing their decisions, or to journalists hesitating to investigate certain matters.

Our remit concerns the more serious and systematic crimes targeting elected representatives, public officials and journalists as they perform their duties.
